Russo-Turkish War of Liberation
1877-1878
Chapter Three - Small arms of the warring states
Romanian small arms
Romania took an active part in the war with its 35,000-strong army on Bulgarian territory. The fights at the town of Pleven, where Romanian alongside Russian soldiers had fought for Bulgaria's liberation, remain memorable. The Romanian army carried out some operations along the river Danube, with which it secured the right flank of the advancing Russian army. The weapons used by the Romanian soldiers were not of a good quality in comparison with the weapons of the two main warring parties. There were financial reasons for that. On the eve of the war, besides the Belgian and French cartridge system guns, the Romanian army had at its disposal 25,000 Peabody guns and 25,000 Dreyze guns. Some more 25,000 Krnka and 3,600,000 cartridges were taken out of the warehouses of the Russian army. Peabody guns were mainly used in the fights at the town of Pleven.
